Mac OS X rhyolite-MELTS

small logo

Mac OS X version 10.6+, 10.7+ (Intel-based hardware required)

New Release - Version 1.0.1. This is a bug-fix release that corrects an error that occurs in isenthalpic mode when quartz is present on the liquidus. If you are running version 1.0.0 of rhyolite-MELTS (check the window title of the launched executable) then it is stronly recommended that you upgrade to version 1.0.1. Simply download a new executable as described below and discard the older version.

This page provides instructions for configuring your Mac OS X system to run a native version of the rhyolite-MELTS/pMELTS software package. The most up to date version of rhyolite-MELTS/pMELTS is available for Mac OS X version 10.6 (Snow Leopard) and 10.7 (Lion).

Rhyolite-MELTS is a modification of MELTS that is intended for calculating phase equilibria in hydrous, highly silicic magmatic systems. Rhyolite-MELTS improves recovery of quartz and alkali-feldspar stability relations and permits more accurate modeling of chemical systems that demonstrate invariant behavior.

Rhyolite-MELTS is based on the original MELTS calibration with modifications that should only affect the stability of quartz and alkali-feldspar. Consequently, application of rhyolite-MELTS to more mafic systems (or any system that is quartz and alkali-feldspar absent) should yield results identical to those from MELTS. A number of algorithmic modifications have been made to rhyolite-MELTS that make the program less prone to numerical failures. A detailed description of rhyolite-MELTS along with applications of the software may be found in:

Gualda G.A.R., Ghiorso M.S., Lemons R.V., Carley T.L. (2012) Rhyolite-MELTS: A modified calibration of MELTS optimized for silica-rich, fluid-bearing magmatic systems. Journal of Petrology, (in press).

Results computed using the rhyolite-MELTS software package should cite the above reference. Calculations utilizing pMELTS should continue to cite Ghiorso et al. (2002). For additional information see the MELTS citation link.

The executable is statically linked against the OpenMotif libraries provided by the MacPorts group. It should run under any Mac OS X 10.6+ implementation and has been tested with the Apple X11 server.

Download and Configuration of MELTS/pMELTS:

  • Verify that the Apple X11 server application is installed in the Utilities sub folder of the Applications folder. If it is not, go to the Apple web site and download the application.
  • Verify that you are using an Intel-based macintosh running Snow Leopard (OSX 10.6.x) or Lion (10.7.x)..
  • Download the compressed executable image of rhyolite-MELTS/pMELTS from this link and save the file as rhyolite-Melts-1.0.1-Mac-OS-10.6-10.7.zip to the hard drive.
  • Open the OS X Terminal utilities application and navigate the directory tree to the location where the file rhyolite-Melts-1.0.1-Mac-OS-10.6-10.7.zip is located.
  • If your browser automatically decompresses zipped files (e.g. Safari) this step may not be required. But, if it does not, in the terminal window run the Unix command unzip rhyolite-Melts-1.0.1-Mac-OS-10.6-10.7.zip to decompress the executable image.
  • In the terminal window run the Unix command chmod 755 rhyolite-Melts-1.0.1-Mac-OS-10.6-10.7 to ensure that the executable image has the correct permissions.
  • Optionally move the executable image to a convenient directory.
  • Optionally, download the MELTS input file morb.melts and the pMELTS input file mm3.melts for testing purposes.
  • Start the X server: double-click the X11 icon.
  • In a terminal window created by the X server, navigate to the directory where you have placed the rhyolite-MELTS/pMELTS executable and start the program by typing ./rhyolite-Melts-1.0.1-Mac-OS-10.6-10.7. You will be asked to choose rhyolite-MELTS or pMELTS mode and the interface should display on your monitor. Resize as appropriate in order to see the entire interface.
